The Pueblo Police Department identified the officer who shot and wounded a suspect near the intersection of 10th and Amarillo in late May.

Police said Officer Stephen Biggs shot 45-year-old Michael Valdez, who was later released from the hospital and booked into the Pueblo County jail on felony menacing charges.

Biggs is a seven-year veteran of Pueblo PD.

As News 5 has reported, Valdez was shot in following a family disturbance at a home on Nielson Avenue.

Officers said they were told Valdez was armed before they found him near the Highway 50 bypass around 10:30 a.m. on May 30.

Pueblo Police say Valdez ran from officers before turning in a shooting stance with a weapon, that’s when he was shot. Biggs was not injured in the incident.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
