As we face near record breaking heat and triple digit temps this weekend, we’re watching out for your safety with an important reminder. Every year an average of 37 kids die trapped inside a hot vehicle and so far this year, 9 kids have already died from this.

It’s now legal to break into a hot car to save an animal or child, but it’s not that simple! There are actions you must take before you smash a window.

First step you need to make sure the vehicle is actually locked and you can’t get in. Next, you have to try and make contact with the car’s owner. If you can’t get a hold of them you must call police. Only after these steps can you break in.

It’s not easy to break a car window especially without the proper tools. One common tool you can use is a hammer, but make sure to hit the outer corners of the window.

After you break the window. You have to stick around and wait for officers.
