People across Colorado are gearing up to hit the road and skies.
Today kicks of Memorial Day Weekend travel! As we’ve been telling you, you can expect to see a lot more people on the roads this year!
According to TripAdvisor, about 1/3 of folks are expected to travel this weekend. CDOT tells us I-25 and Hwy 24 are going to be the busiest spots today, so expect some extra driving time when you hit the road.
Of those traveling, TripAdvisor says nearly 75% are driving. According to Waze, the worst times to drive will be today from 3-5 p.m, Saturday through Monday, anytime between 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. and Tuesday from 3-5 p.m.
"CDOT does anticipate that today will be one of the busiest travel days of the year," says spokesperson Michelle Peulen. "It’s the kick off of Summer. It’s the kick off of a long vacation, so a lot of people want to get a jump on that, so they get on the road on Friday."
Across the U.S. over 41.5 million Americans are traveling for the weekend. That’s 6% more than last year and the most travel we’ve seen in over a dozen years.
You could see travel times up to 3 times as long in the big cities – including Denver. In fact, AAA says Denver came in as the 9th most popular travel destination for Memorial Day Weekend.
