Beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, Fort Carson will hold an annual full scale emergency exercise.

The exercise will be held on the west side of the Mountain Post near gate 2. There will be an increase of emergency personnel near Gate 2 and Mountainside Elementary during the exercise. An increased flow of traffic is expected, along with delays, so people are encouraged to plan accordingly.

Fort Carson said the exercise will be paused when school is released as to not interfere with parents picking up students or any bus routes.

The purpose of the exercise is to test their emergency response and recovery capabilities in a hazardous waste scenario. Mountain Guardian 18 will include first responder operations, the establishment of the Emergency Operations Center, by the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, and involvement of nearly every U.S. Army Garrison-Fort Carson staff with support of first responders.

Evans Army Community Hospital will also play a role in the exercise in caring for simulated injuries, but will not impact normal hospital operations.

People are asked not to call 911 if smoke or flames are seen near Gate 2 unless there is an actual emergency.
