COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Will Perkins, an advocate of a state anti-gay rights amendment that triggered a nationwide boycott of Colorado in the 1990s, has died. He was 91.

The Gazette reported Tuesday that Perkins, a co-founder of the conservative nonprofit Colorado for Family Values, died Saturday of natural causes.

The nonprofit campaigned for Amendment 2, which banned state and local laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Voters approved the amendment in 1992, triggering a boycott of the state. Court challenges prevented the amendment from taking effect, and the U.S. Supreme Court overturned it in 1996.

Perkins was a prominent businessman who worked with evangelical Christian ministries that included Focus on the Family.
