COLORADO SPRINGS — In what's been a hard year for many of us, a company is providing hope ahead of the holidays for people who have lost their jobs.
Scheels All Sports, a sporting goods company that will soon open in Colorado Springs, is providing hundreds of jobs for people in Southern Colorado.
"2020 has been a very trying year, a very difficult year for a lot of people," said Weir. "We (my fiancee and I) were both in the job search in March and April when COVID was hitting. So not the best time for be looking for jobs."
According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, in El Paso County this October, 20,800 people were unemployed. The same time last year, about 9,735 people were unemployed.
Weir was offered a job at Scheels when the company began hiring in August. The company has brought on about 100 employees since then, but they're still looking to fill 250 more positions before opening early next year. Those positions include part-time and full-time jobs ranging from sales and cashiers, to freight support employees and those who can operate a 65-foot ferris wheel that will
be placed in the middle of the store.
"All of these jobs that we're creating now are going to be able to impact the community in a great financial way, for the jobs that were created for them (new employees), and then the impact it'll have with shopping and living in the community," said Chris Pyrah, the head of HR for Scheels.
Scheels is expected to open in March, but they're not the only business still hiring during the pandemic. According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, right now, there are about
9,500 jobs available in El Paso County. Some of them include working at school districts, in retail, or in the healthcare field.
