COLORADO SPRINGS — Let me start by saying there is no right answer here and I know many of you have already had to make the decision whether to home school or send in person. Some didn’t have a choice.

We are still undecided and only have a few days left to figure out whether Maverick will be attending preschool in person or not. We’re struggling with what to do.

To send to school or not?

I’ve gotten opinions from everyone: my family, friends, pediatrician, and teachers. The majority side with sending him, though no one is too far on one side or the other.

Maverick‘s opinion:

I finally talked with Mav to get his thoughts. You can see that in the video portion of this (about 3 min in). Don’t judge the ice cream he’s eating or that’s all over his face. I had to bribe him to stay away from the neighbor’s “big boy” birthday party. And it’s keto so “sugar-free” 😂

Pros:

So he’s 3. Do we need to send him? Absolutely not. But Maverick loves to socialize and have his brain engaged. He thrives on structure and activity.

To send to school or not?

Preschool is a great place for kids to grow emotionally and a place where he can further develop his sense of self while learning skills that would be difficult to learn at home.

Cons:

So many great things come from preschool, but I don’t want his first memories of school to be masks and temperature checks, no sharing and a 6-foot rule.

I can deal with these new regulations:

  • Scheduled drop off/ pick up times where temperatures will be taken while your child is in the car
  • Masks are encouraged

It takes Mav time to allow people into inner circle. This is not a bad quality, but because of this, I’m terrified for the adjustment with some of the restrictions.

I do not imagine these will go well at all:

  • Teachers take them from the car. Parents will remain in vehicles at all times
  • Possibility of a 6-foot rule and no sharing. What 3/4/5-year-old could do this?
  • What if school is canceled? It’s a very likely scenario and would definitely upset his routine and mental state

To send to school or not?

If you asked us today, we would probably send him. If you ask us in an hour, that answer could likely change. The alternative I really want is a pod preschool and I have a friend that would join in on that (the buddy Maverick names in the video), but it’s hard to find unfortunately.

This is a judgment-free zone so please no negative feedback, but I would love your thoughts.
