Today’s Forecast:
A powerful winter storm will be moving through Colorado tonight into Thursday morning. This storm is going to pack gusty winds, cold air, and very heavy snowfall across the mountains and elevations over 6,000 feet. Travel tonight and tomorrow morning will be dangerous and extremely difficult, especially over Monument Hill and in the mountains west of I-25. Brief periods of rain could lead to icing on the roadways that would then get covered by snow.
Despite the snow ending Thursday morning, the commute tomorrow to work could still be incredibly difficult and dangerous if our forecasted snow totals come to pass. It's conceivable the gap between Colorado Springs and Denver could close overnight, so be sure to check in with KOAA for updated road closures.
COLORADO SPRINGS: High - 56; Low - 24. Sunny and mild morning with a windy and chilly afternoon behind a cold front. Rain will start falling between 4 to 5 pm with a change to snow between 6 to 8 pm. Snow totals will range from 3 to 7 inches across town, with areas along and east of Academy getting less snow than areas along and west of I-25. Totals will generally be higher to the north.
PUEBLO: High - 62; Low - 28. Sunny and warm in the morning with a cool and gusty afternoon behind the cold front. Rain will start falling between 8 to 10 pm and change to snow between 11pm to midnight. Snow totals will range between 2 to 4 inches across town. Ice could easily develop on the roads tonight with rain falling before the snow.
CANON CITY: High - 63; Low - 29. Sunny and warm in the morning with a cool and windy afternoon behind the cold front. Rain will start falling between 7 to 9 pm with a quick change to snow between 9 to 10 pm. Snow totals will range between 3 to 6 inches across town, with less expected as you drive east away from town on highway 50. There could be some ice on the roads from the early evening rain.
WOODLAND PARK: High - 52; Low - 17. Sunny and crisp in the morning before a chilly and windy afternoon. Snow should start showing up around 5 to 6 pm and continue to snow heavily through early Thursday morning. Snow totals will range from 9 to 12 inches in Woodland Park, with a couple inches less expected in Cripple Creek. Travel overnight will be extremely dangerous and difficult.
TRI-LAKES: High - 40s; Low - 10s. Sunny and crisp in the morning before a chilly and windy afternoon. A brief rain could start falling between 4 to 6 pm but most of what falls will be snow from this evening into Thursday morning. Heavy snowfall could lead to 7 to 10 inches by Thursday morning, with travel difficult to dangerous. The gap between Monument Hill and Denver could easily shut down overnight due to heavy snow and gusty winds.
PLAINS: High - 60s; Low - 20s. Sunny and warm in the morning with a cool and gusty afternoon behind the cold front. Rain will start falling this evening around 7 pm and gradually turn to snow by 11 pm. Travel could be difficult overnight and early Thursday morning from ice and snow on the roads, but areas east of Pueblo should generally see totals at or under 2 inches.
WALSENBURG/TRINIDAD: High - 60s; Low - 20s. Sunny and warm in the morning with a cool and gusty afternoon behind the cold front. Rain will start falling between 6 to 7 pm and turn to snow by 9 to 10 pm. Snow will be incredibly heavy overnight from Walsenburg to Trinidad, but even more so out west through La Veta Pass and in the southern Mountains. Snow totals will range from 7 to 11 inches between Walsenburg to Trinidad, and 10 to 14 inches west towards La Veta and Cuchara. Travel overnight through Thursday mid morning will be very difficult and dangerous, espeically with the potential for I-25 to get icy with rain falling before the snow.
Extended Outlook:
After the snow end Thursday morning, we'll see sunshine return and melting through the afternoon. It'll be incredibly cold Thursday night with residual snowfall and clear skies both allowing lows to slip into the teens and 20s by Friday morning. Friday afternoon is going to be much warmer with highs in the 50s and low 60s under more sunshine. Saturday is going to be amazing with clear skies and highs ranging from the 60s to 70s across the region. Another chance for snow exists on Sunday, but it's too early to know how much will fall.
