COLORADO SPRINGS — On the topic of world-class athletes, there was plenty of star power at Fort Carson Middle School Friday afternoon.
Team USA's Samantha Achterberg and Shawn Morelli shared their journeys with excited students as part of the organization's community outreach program.
"It's really neat to see people are engaged in the sports and the Olympic journey," Achterberg said.
The pentathlon competitor just qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after failing to qualify nearly four years ago.
Morelli is certainly an inspiration as well, after being injured during a tour in Afghanistan, she defied the odds and won two gold medals in cycling at the Paralymic Games.
"It's exciting, I don't tell my story a lot," Morelli said. "It's great to tell it to children and younger adults who are super receptive to it and want to know how can they do it."
