DENVER — In a mad dash of a season, Charlie Blackmon finds himself racing to be reading for opening day on July 24.

It is a challenge he embraces after recovering from the coronavirus. Blackmon joined his teammates at Coors Field Monday, going through a full practice as he attempts to regain his footing.

“I feel great. I have felt that way for at least a couple weeks now,” Blackmon told Denver7 during his press conference. “Yes, I want to be ready for opening day. That’s a pretty short period of time to get ready for Major League Baseball. But I will do my best and that’s kind of the goal.”

Blackmon insisted he “never” considered not playing, and that he feels safe with the protocols in place. The All-Star outfielder experienced minor symptoms for 36 hours: a headache, body soreness and a cough. Though he improved quickly, he was unable to workout. So regaining his strength is paramount.

“We have texted. Seeing him today he looks great. It’s going to be close (for him to be ready), but I am optimistic,” manager Bud Black said. “Knowing Charlie and his commitment to his profession, he’s been doing what he needs to to be ready.”
