PUEBLO — The Pueblo South softball team is the highest-ranked softball team in Southern Colorado and are ready to attack the 2020 season.
"They came to me and said coach, 'this is our year," explained Pueblo South head softball coach Wed Madrill.
But this year almost didn't happen.
"I am just like, no matter what we are lucky to have this season," explained senior catcher Halle Herrera. "Like not everyone got their season. Some got their seasons moved. These 16 games, even though they are short, all matter and we are all so grateful to have this opportunity to play. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to play."
A 16-game season, a 12-player varsity roster & a state tournament all played on one day are just some of the newfound challenges that the Lady Colts will have to persevere through this season.
"It is pretty much our leaders bringing us together," added sophomore pitcher Emily Abraham. "She gives us pep talks a lot. It really helps us focus on the game more and be more connected I guess."
But being connected with a roster of eight returning starters can get interesting.
"(The biggest difference) is probably not having close meetings in the circle," explained Herrera.
Yet the Lady Colts still believe this is their year and aren't letting anyone or anything get in the way of their goals.
"We are going to make mistakes," explained Madrill. "But what we learn from those mistakes is going to make us better and put us where we want to be at the end of the season."
