PUEBLO — It should come as no surprise that Lamar's Jesus Gonzalez racked up an impressive amount of votes to win the final Friday Football Fever: Play of the Night.
Despite battling a type of blood disease known as Aplastic Anemia, the senior standout was able to attend Friday's 2A State Championship Game against Eaton.
A huge inspiration to his Savage teammates, No. 26 cheered loudly from the stands and continued to help rally his team despite a tough 28-21 loss to the Reds.
"It was the greatest experience we could have even if it didn't go the way we wanted it to," Gonzalez said.
After receiving a bone marrow donation, the belief is "Zeus" will make a full recovery and could potentially join Lamar's athletic teams at some part of 2021.
Always finding a way to keep a positive attitude in the midst of his health struggles, it's easy to see why Gonzalez earned top honors for his continued willingness to show up for others.
"Still just an awesome experience, just chills thinking about it," Gonzalez said. "When something great happens you just walk around and take it all in. That's what I did as if I were playing, I'm proud of those boys."
