Smokey Bear, the fictional character who urges forest fire prevention, was first unveiled on Aug. 9, 1944.
The U.S. Forest Service and Ad Council created Smokey and his slogan, "Only you can prevent wildfires, to teach campers and others who venture outdoors how to prevent fires.
It's one of the longest-running public service campaigns in history.
A badly burned cub found in the mountains of New Mexico became the face of Smokey in 1950.
