WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — Police in Wheat Ridge released video Wednesday showing the moment a suspected drunk driver crashed full speed into the rear of a police vehicle.

It happened around 1:52 a.m. Sunday. Officers were on scene investigating a crash on 38th Avenue, just east of Pierce. A unoccupied patrol car was parked behind a tow truck loading a disabled vehicle when it was struck from behind by a pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Mathew Paul, 46, sustained minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The driver of the car from the first crash was standing on the sidewalk and did sustain minor injuries as the disabled vehicle was pushed onto the sidewalk, police said. No one else was injured.

Police released the video in hopes in might be a good example of the dangers officers face.
