EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — An 18-year-old who escaped from the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center in Golden in late June has been found in Colorado Springs.
Quinn Scaggs was reported missing on June 25 after officials at the facility realized he was no longer in his cell. Almost two months after the escape, Scaggs was arrested.
Deputy Director of Communications Madlynn Ruble with the Colorado Department of Human Services said he was arrested Monday evening by Colorado Springs police. He has been booked into the El Paso County Jail.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, he was arrested at 7:44 p.m. along the 1800 block of Bula Drive on outstanding warrants and in connection to two hotel robberies over the weekend. On Saturday at 1:40 a.m., he allegedly went into a business along the 2500 block of Tenderfoot Hill Street, held an employee at gunpoint, demanded money and pistol-whipped the employee. He then fled with money. About 40 minutes later, he allegedly entered a business on the 100 block of N. Spruce Street and held two employees at gunpoint while demanding money. He also pistol-whipped them and fled with money.
Scaggs, who was 17 when he escaped in June, had been committed to the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center on a charge of possession of a handgun, Anders Jacobson, director of the Colorado Division of Youth Services, previously told Denver7. He had been accused of participating in an armed burglary spree in Colorado Springs.
He left his room sometime between 11:58 p.m. on June 24 and 12:21 a.m. June 25. Scaggs escaped the facility by removing the window from his room, which was on the ground floor, and using bed sheets to get over the facility's perimeter fence, authorities said in June. It wasn't clear if somebody helped him escape.
According to court documents, Scaggs had been involved in at least three other incidents at the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center:
- Oct. 8, 2018: Scaggs allegedly spit at a teacher and punched him before putting the teacher in a headlock. The teacher was transported to a hospital and needed surgery for his injuries.
- Jan. 11, 2019: Scaggs, along with two other juveniles, allegedly jumped another teenager and when staff intervened, Scaggs punched one of them.
- Feb. 17, 2019: Scaggs and another juvenile allegedly assaulted a teenager in a lunch room, and the scuffle was caught on surveillance camera.
He faces seven charges related to those three incidents.
It is not yet clear what new charges he will face in connection to this escape and any crimes committed between then and his new arrest. Colorado Springs said they will release more information later this morning.
