CUSTER COUNTY — Folks living in Custer County came together to help out a girl who lost her pig days before the 4H Livestock sale Sunday at the Custer County fair.

Rafael Gonzalez, 10, decided he would donate 10 percent of his winnings for his Grand Champion Goat to Katie Wilkinson, whose pig died days before she was set to auction off the animal at the fair. When bidding started, it quickly turned into a war. The goat ended up selling to Kathy McLaughlin for nearly $6,000, giving almost $599.20 to Wilkinson.

In addition to the generous gesture from Gonzalez, Sangre de Cristo Electric doubled the amount, giving almost $1,200 to Wilkinson!

"I was so amazed when he just said that he was going to donate money to me." "My mind was blown when it was doubled because someone else donated money to me," Wilkinson said.

"It felt really good doing something nice for somebody else." It is a really good feeling. It is a real good feeling of pride," Gonzalez said.

In addition to all the help, the Cattlewoman's Association decided to waive Katie's debt.
