COLORADO SPRINGS — Today our country will observe the holiday that recognizes the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Several ceremonies in our area took place Saturday, but there are still activities happening around town, where you can safely take part in remembering Dr. King and his dream.
The Pikes Peak Diversity Council and Colorado College are putting on a virtual event. The theme is "Community out of chaos, change now!"
"We hope that people remember that this community has had some chaotic times before, but we can come out of that if we commit to change now," said Kimber Reese, an organizer for the event.
Reese said she and other organizers came up with this theme after looking at how things have have changed since the pandemic, the political landscape, and the racial tension in this country.
Because the event is virtual break-out sessions have been added, where presenters will talk about their personal stories in dealing with racism, and how they healed. Residents in Southern Colorado can also look at exhibits, listen in on guest speakers, and participate in panel discussions.
Reese says she recognizes that our nation is in pain, and she wants this event to heal.
"We must continue to reach for each other so that equity and equality continues to grow," she said.
