The Salvation army teamed up with Walmart to make the event happen. The goal is to help is to help insure that kids have a positive start to the school year with all of the supplies they need.

"We have so many families in need in our community, and they're dealing with issues like how they're going to pay for food or how they're going to pay this month's rent. And then to add on top of that the cost of back to school supplies it's really daunting," said Caleb Frankhauser with the Salvation Army.

Similar events were held at Walmart stores across the nation this weekend.

All supplies collected at the events in Southern Colorado will stay in the local communities.
