COLORADO SPRINGS — Hundreds of families were able to pick up free backpacks and school supplies Saturday thanks to the Salvation Army, United Way, and local non-profits REACH Pikes Peak and COSILoveYou.

The organizations came together to host the drive-thru event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Fountain Valley neighborhood in Colorado Springs.

"They won't go with nothing because usually, they do. It's hard to afford everything all at once. So I feel better knowing they have their supplies," Deann Arellano said.

"Not only are they having paper, pens, crayons, and colored pencils, but we've also put a face mask inside each backpack so they can be prepared," Lt. Paul Chisholm said.

Volunteers were also prepared to hand hungry stomachs. They handed out snacks cooked up about 400 hot dogs for families who stopped by the event.

If you're still in need of assistance for your family, you can reach out to the Salvation Army. That information can be found below.
