COLORADO SPRINGS — Bulls aren't the only ones bursting out of the gates at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, crowds have also been rushing in and supporting more than just a show. Part of the proceeds from the rodeo support military members and their families at the military bases in Colorado Springs.
Last year, the rodeo gave $189,000 to the military bases in Colorado Springs. Those with the rodeo said the support for the military has been a tradition since 1946. They provide things like food baskets during the holidays or programs for family members while a loved one is deployed. Essentially, they fill any gap in resources that would not otherwise exist. "What they want is to serve, they want to help everybody who's not wearing the uniform... The rodeo here, they show a lot of kindness, a lot of respect for those in the uniform. I think that's a wonderful thing," said Alexander Bendoyro of the Civil Air Patrol.
Around 300 volunteers work the event, according to those with the rodeo, and some of them are off-duty police, firefighters, and military members. Rodeo officials also said over the five days of the event, a little less than 30,000 people attend.
Tickets are still available for Saturday, but those with the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo said they expect them to sell out quickly. To purchase tickets, visit their website.
