BLACK FOREST — A new hiking spot in Black Forest has officially opened to the public.

The Pineries Open Space, just off of Vollmer Road, takes hikers, cyclists, and riders on an almost nine-mile loop that encompasses nearly 30 acres.

A large part of the open space goes through the burn scar that was left behind by the 2013 Black Forest Fire.

One hiker said that hiking through the burn scar gives perspective on how damaging the fire was.

"It's visually interesting also to see how the fire moved around, and how the forest is slowly starting to come back. There's a little growth there," the hiker said.

Visitors are asked to stay on trails, especially through the burn scar, as the ecosystem is till very fragile.
