Suspect arrested in Briargate Parkway fatal crash

COLORADO SPRINGS — Update: 8/7 4:00 p.m.

The Colorado Springs Police Department has finished their investigation into a crash that happened on Briargate Parkway at Explorer Drive early Wednesday morning.

CSPD has arrested 20-year-old Eric Sartuche-Dean of Colorado Springs for Vehicular Homicide after the investigation reveled that Mr. Sartuche-Dean was driving at a very high rate of speed when the crash occurred.

Mr. Sartuche-Dean was not injured in this crash and has been booked into the El Paso County Jail.

The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a crash Wednesday morning at the intersection of Briargate Parkway and Explorer Drive.

Upon arrival, officers found that one of the drivers, 69-year-old David R. Hundley of Colorado Springs, had died as a result of the injuries he sustained in this crash.

Due to the nature of the incident, the CSPD’s Major Crash Team responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. The Colorado Springs Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The investigation revealed that Mr. Hundley was attempting an unprotected left turn from westbound Briargate Parkway on to southbound Explorer Drive in his Honda hatchback when he was struck by an eastbound Infinity sedan.

Mr. Hundley was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Impairment is not suspected in this crash and the investigation is continuing.

This is the 11th traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs in 2020. At this time last year, there were 17 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.
