GREEN MOUNTAIN FALLS — The Green Mountain Falls Fire Department will soon have a new home.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday morning for a new fire station.

Voters approved a bond measure for the new facility four years ago, and the community received a $1 million grant fron the Department of Local Affairs to help fund the construction.

"Currently where we're at, we sit in a flood plain," said District Board President Richard Bowman. "The station is quite old with quite a few problems. We also sit in a red zone down there, It's undefendable."

The department is all volunteer with a paid fire chief. Officials hope the new station will attract more firefighters.

The new station should be up and running by next fall.
