COLORADO SPRINGS — Here's a heads up if you're regular travels include Academy Blvd on a Monday night or before dawn on Tuesday.

Colorado Springs Utilities delayed the move of a massive transformer from a rail yard to the Cottonwood Substation from Sunday night to Monday.

The 250,000 pound electrical transformer will creep along Academy Blvd aboard a 96-wheel trailer to the final destination north of Woodmen Rd. and Stinson Rd. The large piece of equipment arrived in the area from Wisconsin recently.

The police-escorted move is expected to be finished by 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to CSU.

The $2 million new transformer will replace the 45-year-old one currently in use. CSU said the old one will be used as part of the utility's emergency spare strategy, which is a key part of preparation for, and rapid recovery from severe natural and man-made disasters.
