COLORADO SPRINGS — A major intersection near the Citadel Mall will be closed until September.
Crews will be redoing some drainage so the area doesn't flood when it rains, among other improvements.
Drivers, you'll notice the intersection at Chelton Road and Santa Rosa Street will be shut down for construction - that's right off Platte Avenue and Chelton Road. Access to the mall will still be open at the entrances of Galley Road and Academy Boulevard.
Neighborhood access will also be clearly marked.
After construction is done in September, there will be four new traffic signals and some realignments to improve traffic flow.
The project began as a City Stormwater project to reduce flooding, but it became a major collaboration with Colorado Springs Utilities and City Traffic Engineering to both reduce persistent flooding and improve aging infrastructure.
Work continues to add features like new asphalt, curb, gutter, sidewalk, and ADA compliant pedestrian ramps.
This intersection will also get some minor improvements like landscape work and final paving, hopefully making it a smoother drive for everyone.
Keep that in mind if you drive these roads to commute or go shopping, you should consider an alternate route.
