CANON CITY — 4th of July is notorious for causing pets to run away from home, and any pet owners who are still searching for their animals is urged to check with the Humane Society as soon as possible.

The Humane Society reports not seeing a large spike in the number of strays, but says it is always a good idea to check with them first if pets are believed to have run away or gotten lost. Typically, pets are held for 5 days before being admitted into the shelter and could potentially be adopted.

The shelter recommends also filling out lost and found reports at missmypet.org, that can connect those who lost pets as well as those who find them.
