COLORADO SPRINGS — Homelessness remains a critical problem across the Pikes Peak region, so an annual survey is underway right now to determine how many people are on the streets and need assistance on a daily basis.
The so called "Point In Time" survey is conducted by the Community Health Partnernership to find out where these people are living and just how desperate their situation might be.
And the survey is done at this time every year because with the cold weather, more people who have chosen to live on the street or are forced to, take advantage of the services that are offered by various community based
programs.
Jennifer Mariano is the director of the homeless program who told News5 on Monday "Although the numbers annually are important, this is the one opportunity that we get find out why people are experiencing challenges.''
And Mariano says that of the more than one thousand people interviewed last year, nearly half were considered "unsheltered".
Once the information is gathered, money and resources will be directed accordingly.
