Fremont County rafting businesses eagerly waiting to open

FREMONT COUNTY — Memorial Day weekend is coming up and whitewater businesses in Fremont County are waiting to find out when they can open.

The state is asking rafting outfitters to stay closed until there are statewide guidelines, unless you have an approved variance.

Royal Gorge Rafting planned on opening this Friday but now the owner says he will wait until Fremont County's variance request is approved.

"We've already missed six weeks of business right now and things are starting to get really tight. Everybody is already out recreating and the state parks are open so there is no reason why the raft companies can't be open," Ty Seufer said.

Seufer said he has taken precautions in case they open. They will practice social distancing on buses, disinfect rafting materials, and only allow one party in a raft.
