COLORADO SPRINGS — Toxic algae blooms in Prospect Lake may now be causing fish to die off.

A viewer told News 5 that dead fish have been washing up at the lake for about a week.

Blue-green algae caused the city to close the lake and keep people and pets out of the water over the July 4th weekend. At that time, Colorado Springs Parks and Rec was encouraging motorized boats to use the lake to help aerate the water. The department has been treating the 55-acre lake with an environmentally friendly product.

The algae is highly toxic

News 5 has reached out to the city for comment and we are awaiting a response.
