MANITOU SPRINGS — Firefighters from across Colorado climbed the Manitou Incline in full gear Friday morning to honor the nearly 350 firefighters who were killed at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

RJ Gerry created the climb five years ago and says it's important that we continue to remember those who died. Despite the pandemic, he wanted to continue the tradition and went to the city to get approval for the climb.

Firefighters climbed over 2,700 steps in the same gear those firefighters wore when they climbed the World Trade Center. He says events like this are important to raise awareness.

"I think the two to three-minute clip that is played on the nightly news is something that people can look and go wow. If I can touch one person to remember the families, that's my goal," said Gerry.

Incline staff says more than 40 firefighters participated in the event this year.
