LITTLETON, Colo. — Students at East Elementary School in Littleton are learning how to open up about their feelings with the use of smart watches.

The children are monitoring their heart rates and learning ways to calm themselves down when they're overwhelmed.

The bands on the watches change colors depending on the student's heart rates:

  • Blue means a normal heart rate
  • Yellow means an elevated heart rate
  • Red means a high heart hate

Charlotte, one student at the school, said she was able to notice her watch turned red and took "belly breaths" to calm down.

Students and parents said they have seen results of the watches at home and by learning ways to manage stress, they're able to cope with things that upset them inside or outside of the classroom.
