COLORADO SPRINGS — On Friday at about 12:19 p.m., a male inmate needed medical attention in his cell after attempting to hang himself at El Paso County Jail.
According to El Paso County Sheriff's Office, numerous deputies along with medical responded to a male housing ward call that a male inmate, now identified as Shawn Meehan, 47, was attempting suicide. The deputies immediately attempted to assist the inmate as he had no pulse. Life-saving efforts were initiated as the deputies began CPR and used an AED alongside medical staff.
The inmate was pronounced dead on the scene despite lifesaving efforts. The Coroner's Office is not releasing the identity of the deceased male until they are certain of identification and his family has been notified.
This investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
This is the fifth suicide El Paso County Jail has suffered since 2009.
