COLORADO SPRINGS — With more packages arriving at your front door comes an increased risk of porch pirates. According to Nextdoor, a recent survey of neighbors across the country, found that 62% of folks have been a victim of a package theft.

One tip is to download the Nextdoor App on your smartphone. On the app, you can warn your neighbors if you see anything suspicious and let them know if you've been a victim of a porch pirates. Likewise, if they've noticed anything out of the ordinary, they can share that on the app as well.

The safest option is having those packages delivered to your work address.

If you have to have them delivered to your home, consider investing in a surveillance system or a ring door bell. Today, you can even access that surveillance from your smart phone.

Having furniture or large pots on your porch is another added safety measure. That way your mail man has a place to hide any deliveries.

"A lot of thieves if things aren't readily seen from the street, it will deter them from taking something if they can't see it initially before walking up on the property." explained El Paso County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Jacqueline Kirby.

If you are a victim, file a police report with your jurisdiction. Often if you want a refund from the company you ordered from, you'll need that police report handy.

Most companies will provide you with a tracking number when you place your order, so make sure you're going to be in town when your package arrives.
