COSTILLA COUNTY — The Costilla County deputy shot multiple times while responding to a burglary call is already out of the hospital just 24 hours after the incident.

According to the sheriff's office, Deputy Keith Schultz went to the Sangre De Cristo Ranches subdivision southeast of Fort Garland just before dawn.

Schultz was reportedly met by homeowner Jackie Wampler Jr upon arrival, but got into a gunfight with the man. The deputy was hit several times, yet made it back to his patrol car to drive to a safe location to be treated.

He was eventually taken to the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa for treatment.

Agencies from across southern Colorado were called in to assist with the manhunt for the homeowner. The SWAT team from Alamosa City was able to track down Wampler before noon.

According to the sheriff's office, there was no evidence of a burglary found at the home where the call originated. Further details on a possible motive have not been released.
