COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado Springs City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to make the second Monday in October Indigenous People's Day.
This was the first time the council has voted to make the proclamation permanent.
To celebrate the proclamation, Colorado Springs' indigenous community held a rally outside of City Hall and marched to the 77-foot mural honoring missing and murdered indigenous women.
Some demonstrators said they have been working toward this for years and it feels great to have city leaders acknowledge such an important day.
"Our elected officials are finally acknowledging indigenous people, honoring our presence here, honoring our culture and they are no longer giving us scraps. We are not having to beg for this anymore," Monyka Snowbird said.
