FORT CARSON — If you're a military family in need of some coats or warm winter gear, there is a coat giveaway happening Thursday morning on Fort Carson where volunteers are making sure you get ahold of cold weather necessities.

The giveaway is taking place at the William Reed Events Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The nonprofit the Warrior Warehouse Redistribution Center put this event together, and organizers say they have more than 800 coats to give away to active duty family and veterans.

Volunteers will also be handing out baby blankets, Crocs shoes, hoodies, diapers, gloves and hats.

Donna Swanson, Director of Warrior Warehouse, says this is critical for military families because a lot of them have moved here from warmer places, such as Hawaii or Puerto Rico. She explains many active duty families may not even own a coat, if not for this extra help.

So, volunteers are hoping to try their best to provide warmth for these families.

"It means the world," Swanson said. "I have had many families come and thank us personally. It means so very much to them that we take the time to do this for them."

A lot of these donations came from individuals, as well as the Springs Rescue Mission, Denver Rescue Mission, and the Denver area.

You can donate yourself anytime of the year by calling the Donna Swanson with the Warrior Warehouse at 420-659-8755.

Whatever is left over from this distribution, volunteers plan to give away to the Marion House, Springs Rescue Mission, Denver Rescue Mission, and other places that are in need.

Due to COVID, the event is limited to 25% capacity. Volunteers will be doing temperature checks and enforcing social distancing.
Event organizers recommend if you stop by that you please keep your children at home.
