COLORADO SPRINGS — The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's baby sloth officially has a name! Bean, a Hoffman’s two-toed sloth, was born on May 14, 2019 to proud parents Chalupa and Bosco.

The baby appears to be strong, and first-time mom, 19-year-old Chalupa, is exhibiting quality maternal instincts.

The pregnancy came as quite a surprise for Cheyenne Mountain Zookeepers and staff, when it was first discovered during unrelated veterinary testing. First-time parents, Chalupa and Bosco, had shown no signs of breeding in the four years they’ve lived together at the zoo. However, sloths are nocturnal, so breeding could have occurred after zoo hours.

The zoo said they can't guarantee that you'll be able to catch a glimpse of Bean, but they said he/she is becoming more acting and is even starting to climb around on ropes.

If you plan on visiting the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, make sure you stop by the Monkey Pavilion to try and spot the little sloth.
