ROCKY FORD — A new chapter for one of Colorado's oldest traditions.

The 143rd Watermelon Days starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at the armory near the Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds in Rocky Ford.

Melons are free, but because of COVID-19 restrictions, the watermelon collecting will be drive-thru only this year.

Fair Manager Sally Cope says she's confident in efforts to make the changes run as smoothly as possible.

"People are excited, we are a little nervous on how to control the crowd, but it has been different this year. We planned it, now we unplanned it now we have our big event," Cope said.

There will be signs up in Rocky Ford to direct you to pickup spots for the more than 3,000 watermelons.

Watermelon Days is part of the Arkansas Valley Fair.
