MANITOU SPRINGS — A reminder from Manitou Springs officials to always be bear smart, after a bear attack was reported in a neighborhood in the city.

A media release said between 10 and 11 Wednesday night a bear, with cubs nearby, approached a man walking his dog at the corner of Midland Ave. and Shoshone, and attacked the dog.

The man was not injured; the dog was severely injured but is alive.

The attack comes at a time that wild animals are waking up from hibernation and searching for food.

The release said it's important to wildlife-proof trash bins, and to ensure that no trash if left around properties. That will make bears less likely to enter residential areas.

Those who live in Manitou Springs can pick up an application for a wildlife-proof trashcan at the Planning department. Once it's filled out, it should be submitted to the Code Enforcement Officer.
