EL PASO COUNTY — The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has identified the inmate that died following a medical emergency at the jail on April 4.

According to the Sheriff's Office, just before 10 a.m. on April 4, a medical emergency was declared in a male housing unit. An inmate, who has been identified as 64-year-old Steve Carrasco, was walking to the restroom and fell down, hitting his head.

The Ward Deputy responded to provide medical aid. Carrasco was conscious and said he felt dizzy right before he fell, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Carrasco was then transported to the medical section where medical staff made the determination to dial 9-1-1. He was transported to a local hospital and later died.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Carrasco's death was in no way connected to the COVID-19 virus. Toxicology results are still pending.
