COLORADO SPRINGS — Academy District 20 will add an extra 10 minutes to the end of each school day to ensure the students meet the required contact hours before June.

The school district says to ensure those hours are met they typically build extra days into the school calendar. This year Academy District 20 built in six extra days.

Because of this year’s snowfall, including Monday's closure, the district has already used four and a third of the allocated six days.

Since the district experiences the worst weather in March and April, and to keep from extending the school year into June, they are adding an extra 10 minutes to the end of each school day starting January 8, 2020 and extending it through the end of the school year.

Academy District 20 says if they don't have any additional delays or closures, students will finish the school year earlier than the current calendar. However, if they do have more delays or closures, adding 10 minutes to the daily schedule will allow them to finish the school year before June.

All bus schedules and district sponsored after-school activities will be adjusted to meet this updated schedule. Additionally, each principal will send communication with school specific information in the coming days.
