FORT CARSON – A memorial service held Friday for a fallen Fort Carson soldier.

Taps played as friends and fellow service members walked into the Soldier Memorial Chapel. The event in honor of Sgt. Joseph Collette who was killed during combat in Afghanistan on March 22. He was a member of the 242nd Ordnance Battalion, 71st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group.

Staff Sgt. Frank Jacobs served with Collette, and called him a genuine, hard-working man with good character and was always good for a laugh.

“He was getting in trouble for something one day and he was in front of the first sergeant commander and they were giving him a pretty good riot act,” Jacobs said. “His comment was ‘I should have hamburgered when I hot dogged.'”

Collete was killed in the same ambush attack that claimed the life of Green Beret and Colorado native Sgt. 1st. Class Will Lindsay.
