COLORADO SPRINGS — A photographer who gained fame for his work during World War II was honored Monday in Colorado Springs.

Jim Bates is best known for his photos taken during the war, including those of a tank battle in Cologne, Germany.

A man captured in those photos, Corporal Gunner Clarence Smoyer came to the Penrose Library for the ceremony and to remember Bates and his contributions in recording history.

Smoyer says he has only recently started sharing some of his stories, “for a long time I didn’t talk about it at all until we started to go to the reunions and they encouraged us to tell our stories.”

Many of the photos Bates took are available for the public to view at the Penrose Library downtown.
