PUEBLO – On Saturday, Pueblo Police officers responded to the National Pride Car Wash located at 1420 W. Hwy 50 regarding an attempted carjacking.

According to Pueblo PD, when officers arrived at the scene they learned the suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Scott Mendoza, had fled on foot from the carwash.

Mendoza was spotted running across the Pueblo County Club golf course. Officers set up a perimeter and were able to take Mendoza into custody in the 3200 block of N. Elizabeth St.

PD said the investigation revealed that Mendoza had approached a woman who was drying her car and entered the vehicle through the driver’s side door. The woman’s 15-year-old daughter was inside the vehicle in the passenger seat. Mendoza attempted to start the vehicle but was unsuccessful.

The woman screamed at Mendoza and prevented him from closing the car’s door. Her daughter then exited the vehicle with the key fob.

PD said the woman told her daughter to call the police and at that time, Mendoza exited the vehicle and took off running.

According to Pueblo PD, Mendoza was booked into the County Detention Center for Attempted Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft and an additional arrest warrant.
