PUEBLO – As the number of car thefts in Pueblo continue to rise, the Police Department is looking to start a new program to prevent theft.

Officers said they have seen a steady increase in vehicle thefts over the past six years.

As part of the new program, the department said it wants to start giving drivers steering wheel locking devices. The locks will be given out to people who own vehicles that are at high risk of being stolen.

“These devices, these locking devices are primarily going to be distributed to individuals that their cars are out on the street not in a well-lit area in a way to try and reduce those vehicles from being stolen,” said Sgt. Mark Duran.

The program can be started as early as next year and the lock will be free, according to the department. However, this all depends on whether the City Council will approve accepting money from the state to get the program going.
