CAÑON CITY – Fremont County Sheriff-elect Allen Cooper announced he will appoint a longtime law enforcement partner to serve as his undersheriff when he is sworn in.

Cooper announced his new undersheriff will be Derek Irvine, who currently works as a sergeant at the Cañon City Police Department.

Cooper said Irvine has 22 years of experience and mentioned the pair started their careers in Fremont County. Cooper also said they previously served together as part of a multi-agency regional response team.

Cooper and Irvine will take over for interim Sheriff Ty Martin and current undersheriff Megan Richards. Martin took over for former Fremont County Sheriff Jim Beicker, who announced his resignation in July and officially stepped down on Aug. 28. Martin previously served as the undersheriff for 15 years with Beicker.

Cooper won the election for Fremont County Sheriff with 61.25 percent of the vote, beating challengers Boyd Canterbury and Skip Moreau.
