First-degree murder charge for killing of Army Captain

COLORADO SPRINGS – Police have filed charges of first-degree murder against a Colorado Springs man for the killing of Army Captain Daniel Lehman in September.

27-year-old Gilberto Chavez, Jr. was already in custody on an unrelated case. News5 is working to learn more about why Chavez was already in custody. He has a court date set for next week on the murder charge.

Captain Lehman, a West Point graduate who was stationed at Fort Carson, was found dead on Costilla St. near the intersection with S. Nevada on the morning of September 15th.

Investigators have not released information on a possible motive in the case or how they linked Chavez to the killing.
