For the first time in at least ten years, quadruplets have been delivered at the University of New Mexico Hospital.
Pre-pregnancy, Elia Payan-Sanchez developed Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, a condition in which blood clots form throughout the body, blocking blood vessels. UNM doctors say it has a high mortality rate, some moms only have a 50 percent chance of survival.
Last month, Payan-Sanchez was 27-weeks pregnant when she and her husband, Rafael Rodriguez, were traveling from Chihuahua, Mexico to Colorado.
Her doctor in Mexico had been monitoring her, but on their road trip, her blood pressure began to rise. Doctors had to perform an emergency C-section to deliver the babies, who weighed just one pound.
Gabriel, Miguel, Elia, and Rafael have been in the hospital for a month. Doctors say they are doing well, but need to stay in the hospital for another 10 weeks.
