Thousands of students are headed back to the classroom today in southern Colorado and kids in one district have a have a lot less to worry about this year.

District 11 is providing students with a free school supply kit and helping families who have a hard time making ends meet.

This is a huge help for families in District 11. All the kids from kindergarten to 8th grade get a bunch of free supplies including markers, pencils and paper. Items that can really add up for parents!

“That would be cut back on groceries, it would be cut back on outings, it’s going to be cut back on just any special thing for a little while to just pick up the extra,” said District 11 parent Melissa Spencer about paying for school supplies .

Melissa’s kids Erick, Hannah and Aiden have been District 11 students for years, but school isn’t cheap and making ends meet has not always been easy for this mom of three.

Parents are spending hundreds of dollars on school supplies each year, so Melissa says when she got word that D11 was giving the students a school supply kit she breathed a huge sigh of relief.

“It will ease the burden on having to scramble to save up the money for those supplies,” said Melissa, “I’ll be able to put that towards other things that we need as well.”

The money to pay for the school supplies is coming from the Districts general fund.
