COLORADO SPRINGS – A Colorado Springs man is facing three years in prison and three years of probation for a shooting in a Kmart parking lot last December.

Michael Parkhurst was sentenced Monday for shooting and killing 23-year-old Cory Forbush in the parking lot of a Kmart store off of N. Nevada Avenue on Dec. 27, 2017.

Parkhurst was arrested nine days later by El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies and was charged with murder, but a grand jury later determined he was acting in self-defense and those charges were dropped.

He was convicted of a tampering charge and drug and burglary charges relating to crimes that occurred before the shooting.
